Meng Hongwei will be prosecuted after allegedly taking bribes and abusing his power.
By Anna Fifield Anna Fifield Beijing bureau chief. Email Bio Follow March 27 at 7:03 AM BEIJING — The former head of Interpol, a Chinese bureaucrat at the missing persons’ bureau who himself went missing in China, has been stripped of all his positions and expelled from the Communist Party, the party watchdog said Wednesday.
Meng was a member of the party’s powerful central committee and a vice minister for public security who had become the first Chinese president of Interpol in 2016, part of Beijing’s efforts to garner greater influence in international bodies. Interpol put out a statement saying it had accepted Meng’s resignation and a South Korean was chosen to replace him.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has led a multiyear anti-corruption campaign, during which thousands of officials and business executives have suddenly vanished, only to reemerge months later to face government charges.
