The trial of a former footballer accused of rape has been pushed back by more than a year - and will now take place five years after the alleged offence.
Former Burnley FC John Cofie, of Forest Drive, Sale, is accused alongside 29-year-old Nathan Stuart, of Pack Horse Close, Northwich, of raping a woman in 2019. Both men denied the charges when they entered pleas in February 2021. The trial of the men was due to begin yesterday but fresh court delays meant that the hearing could not take place. An administrative hearing is planned for later this week with a new trial date set for February 19, 2024. That will be exactly three years after the pleas were entered.Cofie, of Forest Drive in Sale, retired from football in 2020 having played for a host of clubs including Chorley and Southport.
After his retirement, he briefly returned to coach at his former school, Moorland Private School in Clitheroe.
