Former BBC director Greg Dyke said he believed Gary Lineker’s tweet was acceptable as “we live in a world of freedom of speech” and that the BBC had “undermined its credibility” after removing him
“Gary Lineker is a great British institution in my opinion, but I think they’ve got this wrong and I think they are pandering to the Conservatives here and that’s not right.
Other members of the show’s punditry team, Micah Richards and Jermaine Jenas said they backed the pair’s decision.and said they too would down tools in a showdown with the national broadcaster. “We are comforted that football fans who want to watch their teams should still be able to do so, as management can use World Feed commentary if they wish.”
He added he absolutely respects pundits “decisions” not to appear and said the BBC would have to “look at the programme they’re going to produce for the weekend as normal”.
