McVay was involved with the construction of five Super Bowl-winning teams.
John McVay, who helped craft the 49ers’ Super Bowl-winning dynasty in the 1980s, passed away Monday. He was 91.
McVay was instrumental in helping former coach Bill Walsh find those players and eventually win the Lombardi Trophy five times. McVay, a long-time resident of Granite Bay in his retirement, is the grandfather of Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay. “There aren’t many desk jockeys getting in the Hall of Fame. That’s for good players,” McVay said in 2013 with his dry wit. “I’m really honored, and as you can imagine, overwhelmed. Having gone to many of these dinners and looked up at guys who are Hall of Fame players, it’s humbling.”
Upon leaving the talent-thin Giants, McVay joined the 49ers with a personal mandate: “I’m to make damn sure they have enough players. And we were scrambling. It was a lot of fun working with Bill and Eddie . Because if we said, ‘Eddie, we need a tight end,’ he’d say, ‘Then get one. Better yet, get two.’ ”
