The province’s announcement includes a crime towing and auto theft team run by the Ontario Provincial Police that will work with other forces, plus a new “major auto theft prosecution response team” that includes legal help so the OPP can “prepare and prosecute complex cases.” An extra $1.4 million over the next three years will be put into a Greater Toronto-Golden Horseshoe auto theft investigative fund for police to spend on supports such as improved technology.
OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique said auto theft “is a business that pays huge dividends. So this type of approach is what we need to put an end to it once and for all.”“Ontarians should not have to fear for their safety or worry about the security of their property,” he said.
