Sisters Ava and Izzy of Hanover, New Hampshire, were curious as to why frog eggs that they found near their home had different colors on them. Two years later, with the help of their scientist-dad, they published their findings.
Ava and Izzy Calsbeek, two sisters from Hanover, N.H., published their research on wood frog eggs with their dad, Ryan Calsbeek, a professor of biological sciences at Dartmouth College.
They put the frog eggs into two batches: One tub had direct sunlight coming from above the eggs, while the other had a mirror underneath the tub so that light could be redirected up towards the eggs. “It’s better for the frog eggs to be in groups because they heat themselves,” Ava said of the findings.
That sort of unpredictable fluctuation in temperature, Ryan said, can leave different species unprepared for drastic changes in climate. Ryan Calsbeek, whose biological sciences research at Dartmouth specializes in sexual conflict, natural selection, and reptiles and amphibians, helped his daughters, Ava and Izzy, compile the data they collected for their research.
