AVONDALE, Ariz. — Inside the Trackhouse Racing hauler for Ross Chastain’s No. 1 team, a watermelon sits in a padded crate on a countertop. Hauler driver Roy Miller purchased it from a family-owned produce stand in Salisbury, N.C., earlier in the week as it is Miller’s task to make sure a watermelon is accessible so that Chastain, an eighth-generation watermelon farmer, can perform his trademark celebration where he smashes a watermelon anytime he wins.
“The emotions are surprisingly good,” Chastain said. “Like, I’m not sad. I’m not upset. … I thought if I — like this scenario, if I lost by a little bit, that I would be really upset, and I’m not. Like, I’m so proud and so happy to give our first shot at these playoffs and at racing in the Cup Series with Trackhouse, and we just ran second.
It would’ve been understandable for Chastain to feel sadness about coming up short. After all, there are no guarantees he will again find himself in this position, with a championship realistically within his grasp. This might be his one and only shot.But Chastain refused to look at it from this perspective. Same for those in his orbit on pit road.
