For a prosperous America, we must invest in rural Texas | Opinion
, we must be cautious not to forget rural Texas. Much of the state’s wealth is grown, extracted or manufactured in rural Texas before being transported to market throughout the state, nation and globe. The transportation network that connects rural and urban Texas is an invaluable asset to both the state and the nation.
Everything is bigger in Texas, and the staggering growth of the state is no different. From 2000 to 2020, the state’s population increased by 41%, and this growth shows no signs of slowing — Texas’ population is expected to increase by another 60% in the next 20 years. Migration into Texas’ cities has already spurred incredible investments in urban infrastructure. But, if you’ve ever made the 16-hour or longer drive across Texas, then you’ve seen just how little of the state is actually urbanized.
Texas has committed to addressing these issues through upgrades in highway infrastructure in major corridors statewide recently completing $7.5 billion in road improvements in rural Texas with another $7.2 billion in upgrades either planned or underway. Even with the state’s massive investments in rural infrastructure, Texas is still facing a $27.8 billion backlog to fund all the improvements necessary to support the state’s growing economic activity.
