People and households on low incomes, especially those on income or disability assistance, can\u0027t afford a healthy diet after paying rent

The report uses a survey tool known as the national nutritious food basket to determine the cost of 61 food items at grocery stores in different parts of the province. The report showed monthly costs last year in the five regional health authorities ranged from a low of $1,193 in Fraser Health to a high of $1,366 in Island Health. The report reviews five household compositions and income levels.

“Access to affordable, culturally preferable, nutritious and safe food is critical to the health and wellbeing of British Columbians,” said Dr. Charmaine Enns, medical health officer for Island Health. “Household food insecurity takes a major toll on people’s physical and mental health, social and emotional wellbeing, and on our provincial health-care system.”

Babies, kids and youth are at an increased risk of anemia, asthma and hospitalization on unhealthy or inadequate diets, and they also have poorer academic outcomes and social skills.Article content
