'Toddler drinks have no specific role in routine care of healthy children,' George Fuchs, from the American Academy of Pediatrics, told Newsweek.

'Follow-on formulas' are not necessary for the majority of children aged 6 to 36 months old, experts say.In a new report, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, researchers from the AAP's Committee on Nutrition reviewed the U.S.'s growing array of toddler formulas and concluded that the majority of these products were promoted using misleading marketing tactics.Follow-on formulas, which generally designate formulas aimed at toddlers and young children, i.e.

Some of these follow-on formulas have been criticized for having high levels of sodium, added sweeteners and sugars compared to cow's milk, which can influence children's taste preferences later on in life.Compared to unfortified cow's milk, children who consume follow-on formulas have demonstrated an increased intake of vitamins D and E—micronutrients that are often lacking in the diets of many young children in the U.S.
