Pediatricians often screen for menstrual issues to identifydisorder: low energy and eating disorders, irregular periods and low bone density that puts an athlete at risk for fractures, Dr. Rachel ChamberlainKoutures said he sees one or two patients each month in his practice who show signs of female athlete triad disorders.

But both physicians agreed that an athlete's menstrual history should be kept between the patient and their doctor — not reported to the school district.
