Calgary Flames winger Andrew Mangiapane talks with media before the start the Calgary Italian Open in support of Renfrew Educational Services at Cottonwood Golf & Country Club.
“I’m shooting, passing, practising like I normally would and working out like I normally would,” Mangiapane said Monday at the Calgary Italian Open, where he was helping to raise funds in support of Renfrew Educational Services. “I still have to keep up with the physio and making everything stronger, but it’s looking good right now.”
As the Flames failed to even earn a playoff invite, Mangiapane was included on every list of Calgary’s biggest underachievers. He didn’t use the injury as an excuse then — the injury was hush-hush until after his operation in late April — and still won’t. In fact, on a blue-sky day at Cottonwood G&CC, he was adamant that he didn’t want to dwell on the past.
Despite all the bluster about the potential for a major roster overhaul, the Flames will return most of the same on-ice personnel. That includes several dudes with only one year remaining on their current contracts, and there will continue to be widespread speculation about whether Mikael Backlund, Noah Hanifin, Elias Lindholm, Chris Tanev and others will ink extensions or instead be traded elsewhere.
