Elias Lindholm’s future will be a hot topic when the Calgary Flames open training camp. He has one year remaining on his current contract.

“I have one year left but if things don’t go as I have planned, then I’ll become a free agent,” he added. “Nothing strange about that. We will see what happens.”

But Craig Conroy, now calling the shots as general manager at the Saddledome, has made it clear that he would prefer to keep No. 28 in the fold. Top-line centres, as the old saying goes, don’t grow on trees. Combining the past two winters, Lindholm has been the lone constant on Calgary’s top trio. There have been fears that he would soon join Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk and Tyler Toffoli on the list of former Flames, so it might be reassuring to hear — straight from his own mouth — that he’s willing to stay put at the Saddledome. On the flip side, some fans question whether it is wise to sign another guy into his late 30s, already the case with Jonathan Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri.
