Airline denies it is in financial trouble and sues the company that seized four of its airplanes. Replacement planes are now lined up, Flare says, and booking are recovering after taking a hit.

In the wake of having four of its planes seized for lease nonpayments, discount airline Flair Airlines is in a three-front battle for its survival, air industry experts say.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Flair sued the Irish leasing company behind the plane seizure, according to a source familiar with the decision to sue. The company, Airborne Capital, declined to comment on the suit.A spokesperson for federal Transportation Minister Omar Alghabra said the government is monitoring the situation and has been in regular contact with the airline.

The fact that Flair missed any lease payments for its planes at all is a sign that the airline was already in some amount of financial distress, Gradek said. On Tuesday, the leasing company which had the four planes seized for nonpayment blasted the airline’s suggestion it had done so in collaboration with the Canadian airline’s larger competitors, and said it had only seized the planes as a last resort.

On Monday, Jones said Airborne had been negotiating with one of Flair’s competitors before the seizure.
