A Native American man wearing a headdress and holding a spear aloft will be the most prominent monument to be built after the tragedy. Though 10 feathers on the man's spear will represent those who died in the attack, the monument does not specifically mention their names or the shooting. Some in the town feel its meaning is broader than serving as a memorial to the dead. A larger, public tribute is still planned.and wounded 13 others inside the school.
The shooting prompted Texas leaders to pass legislation increasing funding for school security. The measures passed after Santa Fe came under increased security after the mass shooting in Uvalde. Santa Fe victims have since joined in calls for gun control measures proposed in the Legislature and have pushed for a law to allow Galveston County prosecutors to release autopsy reports and other information that have been kept secret.
The Warrior Spirit statue, which will be dedicated at Santa Fe High School on Thursday, is seen in a workshop earlier this year.Megan Grove, the chair of the memorial foundation, said"Warrior Spirit" is intended to be a piece of community art. The foundation doesn't refer to the statue as a memorial. Instead, the statue is a remembrance piece, she said.
The Santa Fe Ten Memorial Foundation has for years floated the idea of a permanent memorial, featuring benches and tall metal sculptures. And for years, the grounds of the high school had a sign declaring a grassy area on the school’s eastern boundary as the future site of the memorial.after the school district’s board rejected a proposal to commit to building a memorial
Norman said that while students who were in the high school the day of the shooting have since graduated, considerations had to be made for people who were still close to the victims. Meanwhile, other memorial events will go on. The Memorial Foundation will hold an annual 10K race Saturday and has spent the last week asking people to perform little acts to commemorate the victims, such as wearing red to remember student Jared Conard Black or visiting the beach for fallen teacher Ann Perkins.
