Brent Jadis and his cousin, Brandon Simon, had an unexpected encounter on Aug. 29 when the commercial fishermen were working in the Northumberland Strait ...

Leatherback sea turtles are the largest living turtles globally and face a significant decline in their populations. They are considered endangered in Canada.“It’s huge. And what went through my mind was like, ‘Oh shit, like, there's something on the line. We're going to have to sacrifice the line and cut the line so that we could free him,’” said the Summerside resident.

However, this was the first time Jadis had encountered such a situation, and he wasn't sure how to free the turtle now that they lost their gaff stick.“My cousin, Brandon, he hooked up a rope to a wrench. And he’s like, ‘I want you to chuck this up the line to see if we can get it up.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, man, I can try my best.’”“I got it first hit,” he said. “It was crazy.”

Jadis is a member of the Abegweit First Nation, and Simon is from the Elsipogtog First Nation in New Brunswick. Fishers are encouraged to report leatherback sightings or entanglements to the Canadian Sea Turtle Network's toll-free number, 1-888-729-4667. In cases of dead turtles resulting from entanglement, the organization can arrange collection of the turtles for necropsy at the Atlantic Veterinary College, Martin said.

They come on top of the punishing 16-year blockade that Israel and Egypt have maintained since the I
