As the invasive American bullfrog poses a threat to local frog populations in Chemainus Lake, the District of North Cowichan has granted a local man permission to fish for them for personal consumption.

'I hear that they taste just like chicken,' says Michael Indge, who aims to help control bullfrog numbersThe American bullfrog is native to North America, east of the Rocky Mountains, but has spread in past decades to other regions. It is a voracious predator that eats almost anything it can fit in its mouth.

According to the Invasive Species Council of B.C., the American bullfrog was first imported for frog-leg farming from eastern North America and have since established populations throughout the province. "I thought, since I'm already there for trout, I might as well extend that experience to bullfrogs," he said.Indge wrote a letter to the district's council asking permission to fish for the frogs at Chemainus Lake at night, when the park is closed and the amphibians are most active.
