New case of polio reported in New York City.

About 93% of 2-year-old children in the United States have received at least three doses of the vaccine. The U.S. government recommends doses at 2 months, 4 months, 6 to 18 months, and finally at 4 to 6 years old, though some states only require three doses.

While most Americans are vaccinated against polio, Brown University pandemic researcher Jennifer Nuzzo said this case should serve as a wake-up call to the unvaccinated.“If you're vaccinated, it's not something you need to worry about. But if you haven't gotten your kids vaccinated, it's really important that you make sure they're up to date.”

Polio is spread from person to person or through contaminated water. It can cause paralysis, permanent disability and death after infecting a person's spinal cord. The disease is endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan. It has also been found in numerous African countries, the Middle East and Asia in recent years.
