Sheila Copps resigns over a broken election promise
In 1996, Jean Chrétien’s deputy prime minister resigned because she hadn’t delivered on a campaign promise. That’s seriously the entire reason; and she wasn’t being forced out, either — Chrétien had said she could stay in cabinet. But Copps had been the face of the Liberals’ 1993 election pledge to eliminate the GST, something they obviously didn’t end up doing. So as a form of atonement, she resigned from the House of Commons and stood for a by-election.
Contrast the Collenette affair with the recent case of Liberal MP Greg Fergus, who was merely a parliamentary secretary when he was caught breaching ethics rules by asking the CRTC to approve a cable channel for mandatory carriage. Fergus didn’t resign and he didn’t even apologize, claiming that his championing of the Black-oriented cable channel was merely an honest attempt to have “Black Canadians see themselves reflected in Parliament.
It hasn’t really happened since the Cold War, but there are once again going to be battle-ready Canadian tanks in Europe. On Friday, Defence Minister Anita Anand announced that 15 Leopard 2 battle tanks will be joining Operation Reassurance, Canada’s standing deployment of troops to Latvia in order to help shore up NATO’s eastern flank.
