Despite a fear of heights, Eric Sparling wanted to conquer the Knife Edge in Maine by himself. Along the way, he learned to be kinder to himself and accept help.

Eric Sparling sat on the edge of Joggins Cliffs in Nova Scotia in a harness to improve his comfort with heights.

The fear also had a huge impact the first time I tried to climb a glaciated mountain. I enjoyed the idea of being the kind of person who climbs mountains — a brave man of action. So I flew to Banff in 2015 for a mountaineering course. While others clambered up summits, I huddled in a high valley separating two peaks. The glacier's crevasses were frightening and the peaks seemed too exposed. Even the hike to the hut was intimidating.

A decision point. Forward on the fearful ridge? Or back down the hill, self-recrimination, and telling my wife and daughter I'd given up? I made it across. I felt grateful to my friend for waiting for me and also to the three adventurers who guided me. The generosity of strangers saved my day.
