First Look: ‘The Deepest Breath,’ which debuts on Netflix on July 19, tells the gripping, tragic story of two free divers, world champion Alessia Zecchini and her coach Stephen Keenan.
, you feel your lungs compress and burn. “Free divers take their safety very seriously,” says McGann. “They mitigate risk as much as they can. They’re adults. They know the danger involved, but they do everything in their power to make sure they go home for dinner every night.
Not long after Zecchini and Keenan meet, Zecchini loses consciousness three times at a legendary competition calledin the Bahamas, and Keenan begins coaching her and serving as chief of safety for her most dangerous dive. As they travel, their bond—and in particular, Keenan’s prioritizing of Zecchini’s well-being over all else—becomes a metaphor for love, even as the film remains coy about the exact nature of their relationship outside the sport.
