A consortium of major automakers and rideshare companies has come up with guidelines for so-called 'fallback' drivers who are on-board while autonomous vehicles are tested on public roads
for in-vehicle fallback test drivers for what’s known as SAE Levels 3,4 and 5 vehicles. The AVSC is an affiliate of the Society of Automotive Engineers International’s SAE Industry Technologies Consortia unit. General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co., Daimler AG, Toyota Motor Co., Honda Motor Co., Uber Advanced Technology Group, Lyft and SAE International are members.
Some of the highlights of the 13-page document include such items as classroom and in-vehicle training regarding all aspects of the automation systems, determination if the driver has a “safety mindset” and, for the first time, recommendations regarding rest period to prevent fatigue which could lead to inattentiveness or faulty decisions.
