Kenai Peninsula man died due to complications with the Alaskapox virus.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - A Kenai Peninsula man has died due to complications with a rare virus known as Alaskapox, or AKPV. This is the first case of severe Alaskapox that has resulted in hospitalization and death.
State specialists are now looking to wild animals for more answers. The state has tested many small animals and found the virus infects mostly red voles, shrews, and squirrels. Domesticated animals may also play a part in transferring the virus. “There’s not been any evidence or any cases so far where we believe person to person transmission has occurred, but it is possible, just based on how other orthopoxviruses behave.” Dr. Rogers said and stated that anyone with lesions should see their doctor right away.
