In 2019, Blumhouse Productions announced they were developing a Firestarter remake, a script that King himself approves of, which is not an easy endorsement to get considering his extensive criticism of Stanley Kubrick's 1980 adaptation of The Shining, a universally beloved interpretation.
Of all the adaptations of King's stories currently in the works, Firestarter has one of the best chances to vastly improve upon a previous iteration. The 1984 version was not well received by audiences or critics, and King himself has gone on the record saying he wasn't a fan of it either. An R-rating is an early sign that the new Firestarter movie will remain faithful to the utter brutality of the source material but not a definite indicator of its overall quality.
It's not surprising in the slightest that Firestarter would receive this rating, considering the 1984 adaptation was also rated R, and director Kieth Thomas has teased"people's heads catching fire and their faces melting off." Since production of Firestarter reportedly wrapped this past summer, it should be receiving a release date sometime soon. Now that the film has a rating expect it to debut sometime in 2022. .
