THUNDER BAY -- A male was treated for possible hypothermia after being rescued from the ice near open water in Thunder Bay harbour late Tuesday.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue dispatched an ice rescue airboat shortly after 5:30 pm, after a 911 caller reported an individual walking on the ice near the lighthouse on the breakwall. Firefighters specially trained to conduct ice rescues were deployed from the marina boat launch, and quickly located and secured the person on board the airboat.
They provided initial medical care, treating him for hypothermia before transferring him to Superior North EMS paramedicsThe other incident occurred last Thursday on the Kam River. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue issued a reminder to the public to stay off local water bodies as warmer spring weather begins to approach, making ice conditions unpredictable and unsafe.
