After nine weeks in a coma, Ben Schultz is determined to serve once again—and he’s hoping running can help him get there.
at the Anchorage Glacier Pilots for their First Responder Appreciation Night. It was a special night for Schultz for many reasons—not only because he had joined the Anchorage Fire Department in 2011.
His crew member heard a loud crash as Schultz hit the ground. One of the engineers, who knew Schultz had taken a truck out to train, immediately knew something was wrong. He was in a coma for nine weeks—he had been Med Evac’d to Engelwood, Colorado, after 30 days in an Alaskan ICU—with a laundry list of other injuries: two broken ankles, five broken ribs, a collapsed left lung, a broken left wrist, severe bruising and tissue damage to his liver and pancreas, and a traumatic brain injury.
“It was pretty much full-time rehab,” he says. “My doctors told me, ‘You’re going to get out of this what you put in.’” Once he was able to walk again with less assistance, he started to put more stock in his dream of getting back to running and training for firefighting. When he made it back to Anchorage in May 2018, it wasn't before long he got back into the swing. He joined agym—which he goes to three days a week—and continued working with a physical therapist to get back into running shape.
