“Naive, selfish, egotistical, ignorant” — those were the words McIlroy used at the Genesis Invitational to describe Mickelson’s reported comments about the Saudi Golf League to author Alan Shipnuck. And if anything, McIlroy was being kind.
The sentiment is something to behold, especially coming from a player who has earned a reported $1.075 billion in career winnings, endorsements and course-design revenue. Staggeringly, his argument is that he has been getting ripped off and he was willing to align himself with the aforementioned “scary ” to leverage a few more dollars from the tour that provided him with more wealth than the GDP of American Samoa.
The Saudis, of course, had a different goal in mind. Coaxing Mickelson and other famous golfers to compete in the desert was a version of what’s known as “sportswashing” — hoping that the world would forget the “scary ” stuff and focus instead on how much fun Mickelson and his buddies were having on Riyadh’s manicured greens.
But that didn’t happen. Instead, a long list of stars publicly reiterated their commitment to the PGA Tour. It might have been a coincidence that these statements came after Mickelson’s inflammatory comments were published. But by Sunday, Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau were among those to say they weren’t leaving and it became clear that the SGL idea was in trouble.
