There look to be three assurances in supporting actress: Caitríona Balfe’s work as a loving mother and wife in “Belfast” , Ariana DeBose’s turn as the dancing seamstress in “West Side Story” and Kirsten Dunst’s portrayal as an emotionally paralyzed sister-in-law in “The Power of the Dog” . Despite a BAFTA miss for Dunst , the three have received all the necessary recognition and precursors needed for noms.
Aunjanue Ellis’ SAG snub also carries weight for “King Richard” , but applying the theory that her co-star Will Smith will be receiving a large plurality of no. 1 votes, it’s likely she’s also present on many of those ballots as well. Again, I look back to examples like Leonardo DiCaprio bringing in Tom Hardy for “The Revenant” and Jeff Bridges bringing in Maggie Gyllenhaal for “Crazy Heart.”
Jessie Buckley from “The Lost Daughter” and Oscar-winner Marlee Matlin from “CODA” were names brought up quite a bit in conversations with voters and could sneak into the field, especially with the former. However, Rita Moreno, who would make history as the oldest nominee ever, and the first Latina to be nominated twice, doesn’t seem as likely with “West Side Story” floundering in spots, and DeBose likely locked in for a nom.
