2009 had a best director lineup that seemed to be the standard for predictions for most of the season, with DGA and Oscar matching up. That seems to be the case with Paul Thomas Anderson , Kenneth Branagh , Jane Campion , Steven Spielberg and Denis Villeneuve . Those films feel like they would be in the top five if there were a year of five best picture nominees. The 2009 race also had Kathryn Bigelow becoming the first woman to win director.
The current state of the race seems to be boiled down to “Belfast” vs. “The Power of the Dog,” both of which had. The former missed a directing nod for Branagh, while the latter missed a typically crucial editing nod and Kirsten Dunst in supporting actress. Only one film has won BAFTA without a directing nomination, “Educating Rita” , which took place after the Oscar and was not nominated for best picture. However, “Belfast” has had a robust showing at the U.K.
