The goal is to put in place regulations that for the first time would force airlines to compensate passengers beyond their ticket refunds. The new rules would cover expenses, such as room, meals and rebooking another flight, that passengers incur if the airline causes a cancellation or significant delay.Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in a statement
. “This rule would, for the first time in U.S. history, propose to require airlines to compensate passengers and cover expenses such as meals, hotels and rebooking in cases where the airline has caused a cancellation or significant delay.” The Transportation Department has been pushing airlines to agree to such changes, with some success. The 10 largest airlines guarantee meals and free rebooking on the same airline and nine guarantee hotel accommodation as part of the Department’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard, the Transportation Department said.
