The federal government is putting $740,000 toward a possible search of a landfill Winnipeg police believe holds the remains of two First Nations women they allege were slain by a serial killer.
Red dress cutouts with phrases like 'Search the landfill' were staked in the lawn at the Manitoba Legislature in Winnipeg on Wednesday by a group who yelled 'Search the landfill!' and 'Bring our women home.'
"The situation surrounding the Prairie Green Landfill is heart-wrenching, and is part of the sad reality of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls," Anandasangaree said in a statement. "The only way to advance meaningful and lasting reconciliation in Canada is for all levels of government to be willing partners."
A feasibility study on a possible search that came out earlier this year estimated it could take between one and three years and cost between $84 million and $184 million.
