Federal agency cited Rutgers for an animal welfare violation. Here’s why.

Rutgers University was censured by a federal agency overseeing animal welfare after a monkey escaped from its cage last fall in a Piscataway laboratory and was injured.March 1 for violating the Animal Welfare Act, the federal law regulating the treatment of animals in research, teaching and testing.

The male macaque gained access to all four units of the caging area after an animal care technician failed to adequately secure the door, the report said. “The macaque received adequate veterinary care, which included pain medication and antibiotics,” the USDA report said. “Thankfully no one was injured,” Chandna said. “Not only is it important to maintain safeguards on the cages in order to keep the monkeys safe, but also it’s a threat to public health because so many things could go wrong.”
