The struggle is real for Houston's East End drivers dodging stalled trains. New data proves it.

Brett Coomer, Houston Chronicle / Staff photographerTrains block streets in Houston’s East End have become so pervasive for so long, Paulette Kukuk bought a $30 camera that connects to an Alexa or computer — the kind people buy to monitor their pets — and pointed it out her back window at the rail crossing at Eastwood Street.

The city has started doing some data work of its own at some key train crossings.

City crews mounted cameras with laser eyes to track when trains stopped, along with telecommunications back to a central source. The devices at six locations were funded with a $50,000 grant from Intel. Meanwhile, traffic snakes looking for a relief route. When a Tuesday morning train stopped 20 yards past blocking Milby, it stretched across nearby Eastwood and Lockwood. Drivers south of the train streamed down Rusk, through a mostly residential area, searching for the first safe passage. Dozens turned onto Milby, flying over the tracks bound for Harrisburg where they hoped congestion would not stop them any further.
