A third alleges workplace harassment of a union member. In that case, the union has asked the company for an apology to the worker as well as damages for the alleged conduct of the manager. “St. Anthony Seafoods takes the health and safety of its employees with the utmost importance,” the company stated. “We remain committed to working with the union and our employees to address any concerns about the workplace.”According to information on the provincial website, the Department of Environment and Climate Change, which oversees Labour Relations issues, one grievance filed by the FFAW against St. Anthony Seafoods in 2021 was decided by an arbitrator earlier this year.
Yet another said he decided to stop working at the plant that season because of the long hours. He worked 99.5 hours during the week of Aug. 6, 2021. The arbitrator, however, did not agree that general damages were appropriate in this case, stating, “The actions of the employer were not of such a nature, though, that a remedy beyond declarations should follow.”
“If not,” he predicted, “the parties will almost certainly end up with more grievances and arbitrations such as this.”
