The FBI has subpoenaed records regarding former South Euclid Municipal Judge Gayle Williams-Byers.SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio— FBI agents subpoenaed records this week regarding former South Euclid Municipal Judge Gayle Williams-Byers, who in the last several years became mired in controversy.

City spokesman Keith Ari Benjamin said in a statement that the city “takes these matters seriously” and will cooperate with the FBI investigation. He said the city could provide no additional information.and The Plain Dealer reached out to Williams-Byers, who resigned from the bench on July 31 after more than a decade leading the city’s court. Her attorney, Jeffrey Saffold, said in a brief phone interview that Willams-Byers intends to cooperate with investigators.

A second subpoena sought employment records, including how much she was paid, any unpaid furlough time during the COVID-19 pandemic and the bank account information she used for her direct deposit. Two major disputes between Williams-Byers and city officials erupted in the last three years; both incidents ended up in lawsuits and other court action.City Council countered that Williams-Byers inappropriately wasted money on out-of-town trips. Williams-Byers countered that she was conducting much of the court’s business online and that court staff posted flyers around the municipal building instructing people how to contact the court.
