CLEVELAND, Ohio— FBI agents on Friday arrested a Cleveland man on federal charges that accuse him of trying to cause a train derailment by wedging metal and spikes on tracks and track switches used mostly by Amtrak’s commuter line.
The leg of track he’s accused of tampering with is owned by CSX. It sits just east of East 55th Street. The Amtrak trains typically carry between 180 and 200 twice per day, according to court records. Other debris, however, could have caused serious damage, court records say. Railroad officials told the FBI that because the metal was so deeply wedged in the rail, someone would have had to do so intentionally install it.
Investigators used surveillance videos from train companies and Dominion Gas, which has a nearby office, to identify Findley. Several times the cameras showed him placing the items on the track, according to court records. The jam created a gap between the rail and switch that could cause a train to derail, according to court records.
