Fauci warns of 'suffering and death' if U.S. reopens too soon amid coronavirus crisis
, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, told Congress on Tuesday that states that push too quickly to reopen business and public gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic risk a spike of new illness.
“The consequences could be really serious,” Fauci told a hearing of the Senate health committee. “When you pull back on mitigation, you will see some cases appear,” he said, adding that states should follow the guidelines set out by the government, which call for a 14-day decline in cases before reopening.
Expecting a vaccine or treatment to be available by the time schools reopen in the fall would be “a bridge too far,” he said.
