Charlie Winter wouldn't stop punching the shark in the nose until his daughter was released.
Steve GardnerA North Carolina family's trip to the beach turned into a life-threatening battle with a shark over the weekend.
Charlie Winter and his 17-year-old daughter, Paige Winter, were standing in waist-deep water Sunday in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, when a shark attacked and pulled Paige under. According to family friend Brandon Bersch, Charlie, a veteran firefighter and paramedic, immediately began punching the shark in the nose. “Charlie wouldn’t stop until it released his little girl,” Bersch told TODAY Parents. “Paige is alive today because of her father.”
Paige, a high school junior, was airlifted to a hospital in Greenville, where she underwent emergency surgery to amputate her leg above the knee. "I know I will have a long road to recovery," she said in a statement broadcast by 3rd Hour of TODAY. "I will continue to stay positive and be thankful that it was not worse."Published 6:18 PM EDT Jun 4, 2019
