A wind-driven wildfire thatearly Wednesday forced an evacuation of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and threatened about 6,500 homes, officials said.
At least 800 firefighters were battling the Easy fire in Simi Valley, about 50 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles, a Ventura County dispatcher said. No cause had been determined, authorities said.The blaze, which was reported at about 6 a.m., had burned at least 1,400 acres and was only 5 percent contained on Wednesday afternoon. About 7,000 homes and 26,000 residents were under evacuation orders and advisories in Moorpark and Thousand Oaks, officials said.
"Unfortunately, it was about the worst time it could happen — 40-mile-per-hour sustained winds and fuels that were ripe and ready to carry a fire," Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen told reporters. It hasn't rained in Simi Valley for 125 days, and much of Southern California was under an extreme red flag fire warning as fierce Santa Ana winds swirled around the region,
