The request that the U.S. attorney for New Jersey investigate the death of Carl Dorsey on New Year's Day 2021 comes amid outrage over the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols by five Memphis police officers
Press conference for Newark police shooting victim Carl DorseyRacial justice advocates and the family of an unarmed man fatally shot by a Newark police officer two years ago called on New Jersey’s top-ranking federal law enforcement official Monday to investigate the case after a state grand jury declined to indict the officer last week., just after a dozen plainclothes Newark officers arrived on 11th Street and hurried out of two unmarked cars in what police said was a report of a shooting.
A lawyer for Dorsey’s family, Robert Tarver, said during a press conference in Newark that he had submitted a letter to U.S. Attorney Philip Sellinger and his office that day, “and asking them, no, no, no, no, demanding, that they initiate an investigation into this matter.
“And the decision of the grand jury was that there was no wrongdoing. No wrongdoing when an unarmed man is shot as he’s moving away.”The latest developments in the Dorsey case coincide with the release of footage of the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols earlier this month by five Memphis police officers. The two cases are similar in several respects: Dorsey and Nichols were Black men; both were unarmed; and the officers in both cases are also Black.
