Torres went out drinking May 5, 1977, at a neighborhood bar near his home in the East End, Molina told cadets. Police were called to the bar after Torres got into an argument with other customers at the bar and six patrol officers arrested him. But rather than taking him directly to jail, the officers took him to an area near Friday’s discussion, known as “The Hole,” where police often took people to beat them at the time, Molina said.
Instead, the officers took him back to “The Hole,” and continued beating him. Officer Terry Denson reportedly used an ethnic slur to refer to Torres, before pushing him off the platform and into the bayou 20 feet below. Torres was found floating on the Bayou three days later, on Mother’s Day.
