The driver, who was collecting milk from nearby farms, said he is 'devastated' by what happened
Carl Welburn was lying in the road when was struck by the heavy goods vehicle in Harmby Road, Leyburn, in the early hours of October 26 last year.“He was so popular, when he walked into a room people gravitated to him. His funeral was so packed there was not enough room in the church for everyone,” she said.The inquest heard Mr Welburn had returned home on the night of October 25, after drinking at The King’s Head with his fiance and his daughter.
The driver Nigel Lockwood, who was collecting milk from nearby farms, said he saw something “that looked like a man” in the road after he drove round a bend, but “there was not enough time to avoid hitting him”. Mr Lockwood added: “I'm truly devastated by what happened and my thoughts go out to the family. I struggled to cope emotionally and have had to engage in counselling.”concluded the driver was not at fault, as he was travelling within the 30mph speed limit on the poorly lit road and would not have had enough time to react.
