🔴 The family of a nine-year-old girl who died of invasive Group A Strep days after being misdiagnosed with food poisoning, say she would still be alive had health professionals spotted the signs sooner
Staff initially treated her for food poisoning, but hours later Scarlotte went into septic shock, and she required a transfer to the Great North Children’s Hospital.
Scarlotte died shortly after being transferred to the children’s hospital, on Saturday 28 May. Her family said it was only after her death that they were informed that invasive Group A Strep was the cause.so far this season at least eight children have died with an invasive form of the Strep A bacteriaInvasive Group A Strep is rare but health officials have observed an increase in cases among children under-10 this year.
“So we’re seeing more now than we have seen for the last two years where there were very, very low amounts of infections seen.”Official advice is for parents to contact 111 or their GP if theirParents are advised to “trust your own judgement” and contact NHS 111 or their GP if:the child has had a dry nappy for 12 hours or more or shows other signs of dehydration
