Timothy Chavez was shot and killed late Monday night just outside of his home on South Mittmann Street, near Goliad Road on the East Side. His family will be hosting a public candlelight vigil for him outside of their family home on Wednesday, July 17 at 3816 S Mittman, commemorating his life and celebrating his 15th birthday.

Since Chavez’s killing, his community has voiced fears of gun violence, and the victims claimed it is getting younger and younger.“I could hear his sister screaming and that has stuck with me all night long. I can hear her voice, it’s just traumatizing, you know what I mean?” said a woman who didn’t want to be identified.

Chavez is the second 14-year-old killed by gun violence in the past two weeks after 14-year-old Augie Rangel was found dead on the North side.“Thinking, like, these victims around us are getting younger. Like, they’re getting younger and that’s like a mother’s worst fear, I feel like, is losing your baby in that way, it’s so like meaningless,” said the woman.
