The family of a man who died in the Harris County Jail earlier this year will gather with attorneys and community activists on Monday to discuss a recent finding that their son's death was a homicide.

Lee is one of at least 27 people who have died in the custody of the Harris County Jail this year, the most deaths at the facility in nearly 20 years. The jail population on Monday stood at over 9,900 people, with nearly 1,000 more outsourced to Louisiana and West Texas lockups, county records show. Criminal justice advocatessuch as Senate Bill 6 — which prohibits defendants accused of violent crimes from receiving cash-free bail — for overcrowding, saying that it keeps poor people in jail before they've been convicted of a crime, while allowing wealthier defendants the option to await trial in relative freedom.
Standing outside the jail on Monday, Griffin also demanded an improved notification system and more funding for the county jail to adequately staff and monitor its facilities.
