An 80-year-old man was taken into police custody Friday after an apartment building where he lives in Arlington Heights caught on fire, according to authorities.
Arlington Heights firefighters and police responded around 12:22 a.m. Friday to a multi-alarm fire at a 95-unit apartment building in the 400 block of West Rand Road, according to a news release from the Arlington Heights Police Department. Officials said in the release that it was unclear at the time of the 911 call whether anyone was trapped in the burning building.
“Responding police officers were unable to make entry into the specific unit wherein the fire was centered due to heavy smoke and fire. Instead, first-in Arlington Heights Police and Fire Department personnel conducted an expedited evacuation of the remainder of the building, to include each of the other 95 individual apartments. All residents were able to vacate the building without any reported injuries,” according to the release.
