Thousands of police and civilians gathered on Parliament Hill on Sunday for the 46th Police and Peace Officers\u0027 Memorial service.

Two others — Customs Insp. James Mowat, who died in 1913, and RCMP Const. Vernon Genaille, who died in 2002 — were also added to the honour roll on Sunday. “Once again, on Friday, we were reminded of the tragedies that occur to those officers who selflessly serve our communities,” she said. “Sadly, another partner, colleague and friend, RCMP constable Rick O’Brien, was killed in the line of duty in Coquitlam, B.C.
“Seeing one hat on the podium is already one too many,” said Chantal Lewis, president of the Canadian Peace Officers’ Memorial Association. “Seeing 11 hats on the steps here is heartbreaking. Each hat represents the ultimate sacrifice that these brave officers made.”Article content
