A run game and a healthy defense could mean 11 wins. It’s possible with Matt Ryan, still among the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
Matt Bryant was as automatic as they come as a place-kicker. He was jettisoned in cost-cutting and the Falcons gave the job to Giorgio Tavecchio. The NFL is a one-score-difference league with all the parity and that one score can be a field goal in a lot of games. Tavecchio missed two 52-yard field goals in a preseason game. These are not automatic, of course, and one missed was tipped, but he needed lift on the kicks. Bryant made those kicks.
The notable additions have been on the offensive line with rookie right guard Chris Lindstrom and rookie right tackle Kaleb McGary and veterans Jamon Brown and James Carpenter listed as 1-2 at left guard. The Falcons’ run game was 27in the NFL in 2018. They hired their former offensive coordinator and Tampa head coach Dirk Koetter to try and get the run game revved up.
Brian Hill is fighting for the third RB spot and his pass pro could really give him an edge. But rookie draft pick rookie Qadree Ollison looked good against Washington with 41 yards in 12 carries. He's 6-2, 225 pounds, a change of pace from smaller backs Devonta Freeman and Ito Smith who are 1-2 on depth chart.
