Veterans, civilians and admirers gathered at Veterans Memorial Park for a ceremony marking Memorial Day.
Speaking at the event, Sgt. Maj. Ruben Murillo, Jr. of the U.S. Army Garrison, said, “As you look around you this morning, you will see veterans, active duty, retired, and servicemembers that have a mind that has been filled with memories of service.”
He added, “What you will not see are those that stand before us in spirit, those that have given the ultimate sacrifice to allow us to be here today.” The Memorial Day event, held annually, was organized by Veterans of Foreign Wars. “This day is not a day to remember the ones who served or are still serving, but to honor those that paid the ultimate sacrifice when the time was called,” Murillo, Jr. said.
Walter Crary with American Legion Post 11, urged members of the audience to remember the meaning of the holiday, saying, “We’re gathered to pay homage to America’s finest men and women who gave their lives in defense of our freedom.”Fairbanks Mayor Jim Matherly gave a speech commemorating the occasion. “My wish for you today is to never forget, and that’s why we’re gathered here today, so we will not forget,” Matherly explained.Copyright 2022 KTVF.
