Faculty members at Rutgers University, along with supporters, held rallies Tuesday at four campus locations in support of new union contracts.
“We made a series of proposals around critical issues and needs that will make a better Rutgers for everyone—our students, staff, grad workers, faculty, our communities, the state of New Jersey. It’s completely unacceptable that the administration has dragged its feet for months in even addressing our main demands,” Rebecca Givan, president of Rutgers AAUP-AFT, said in a statement provided by organizers in advance of Tuesday’s rallies.

I stand in strong solidarity with— Bernie Sanders In response, Rutgers spokesperson Dory Devlin told NJ Advance Media that negotiations remain ongoing. Catherine Monteleone, president of AAUP-BHSNJ — the union representing 1,500 medical faculty in Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences facilities across the state — has said it is seeking an agreement to stop Rutgers from hiring nonunion faculty, via the university’s association with RWJBarnabas Health, to replace unionized faculty members.
